Identity conflict has been a major concern over the years across the nations of the world. A people and individual identity keep bringing complex issues in the community.

What are the Levels of identity?

Identity can be seen from four levels: the micro-level which is an individual’s self-definition, relations with people and related entities and issues. The meso-level which pertains to how identities are viewed, formed and questioned by immediate communities and/or families. The macro-level which are connections among an individual or persons and issues from a national perspective. The global-level which connects individuals, issues and groups at a worldwide view.

Some common types of identity are?

The force of identity can be seen in different types which include: cultural identity, professional identity, ethnic and national identity, religious identity, gender identity, social identity, spiritual identity, age identity, language identity mathematical identity, disability identity. We can equally see identity from the perspective of new technological issues, matters arising from the use of technology. And so birds of the same feathers flow together. It becomes very difficult to ignore the concept of identity. They are some places where your identity can define you as an angel or as a terrorist.

What are Some effects of identity?

Identity is the root of discrimination, tribalism, nepotism, partisanship, bias, separatist, terrorists, etc. However, identity can easily bring people together, ease communication and enhance relationship. When a group of persons start reasoning together, they can come up with some common characteristics that defines them and give them an identity.

Who are we calling a believer?

Our emphasis here is on the believer’s identity. By a believer, we are referring to someone who have recognize that he/she is a sinner and cannot save himself, but have been caught up in sin and lawlessness making him guilty before God, the creature of the universe, the maker of all flesh and spirits, the one before whom every soul shall give an account of the life trusted to him or her. With such convictions, he/she has acknowledge the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ in bringing salvation to mankind and have received Christ into his/her life, And stands forgiven from all sins, cleanse by the blood of Jesus, having his/her name written in the book of life, regenerated and ready for transformation by the renewing of the mind via the word of God. By a believer we mean someone who has equally given his/her life to Christ by accepting the Lordship of Jesus Christ, submitting the completeness of his/her body, soul and spirit to God. He/she now has the privilege of being led by the Holy spirit of God, has submitted his mind, emotions and will to the leadership and will of God according to His word as written in the scriptures. One who hates iniquity and loves righteousness.

What is the Definition of the believer’s identity?

Now the believer’s identity is not worldly, but heavenly. Let’s try to define a believer’s identity.

Oneness: by identity of a believer, we are referring to our oneness with Christ. There’s a teaching among some Christians that seeks to express a believer as a godman, yes there is no problem with a believer as a godman but so often some people stretch the teaching to saying that a believer is the fourth man in the Godhead which is a misunderstanding of identity. By identity, we are one in Christ, when God looks at us He sees Christ. God does not need a fourth man in the Godhead, Christ is enough. He sees us in Christ and sees Christ in us. We are in Him and He is in us, our oneness with/in Christ.

At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. John 14:20

This verse of scripture is what Jesus expected His disciples to know after His resurrection.

Unity: The identity of a believer is the unity of the saint with Jesus Christ, in the fellowship of the HolySpirit and with one another. When a believer is having true fellowship with the HolySpirit, you can easily identify him/her as a child of God.

God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Cor 1:9

A believer is united in Christ Jesus the Lord, this unity is stronger as we stay in the fellowship of the HolySpirit.

Bond of Love: the identity of a believer refer to the bond of love that flow from God through a believer via the HolySpirit. It has to do with the sacrificial love of Christ manifested and revealed in our hearts. Our togetherness with Christ Jesus is seen in how we express this unconditional love to other, it’s a prove of identity

Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 1 John 3:16

Speech:  the identity of a believer is in the communication of his mouth and the meditation of his heart. What you say easily reveals who you are. Many ethnic groups are known from their language. There is a language for a believer, the vocabulary is the word of God and the HolySpirit gives utterance.

That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. Philemon 1:6

The identity of a believer can therefore be defined as Christ revealed, seen and manifested in His followers.
