What is the Blessing?

When you study the bible, you will realize that everything that runs through the scripture is founded in Genesis. The very first time God blessed man is in Genesis 1:28.

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

This blessing was what gave man stability and soundness in the garden of Eden until he fail short of the glory of God. And the blessing was tampered with, man lost that state of rest with God and started hiding:

And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. (Gen 3:9-10)

I see this question and answer session between Adam and God as an identity crisis. Adam introduced the arts and science of man hiding from the presence of God, that force within man, the divine element that found pleasure in the presence of God, that seed of godly fellowship was destroy: And it brought about fear, nakedness (sin) and hiding from His presence. God had to address the issue immediately: He confronted fear by standing to talk with man again, confronted nakedness by clothing man and the hiding of man by restoring the blessing in the seed of Eve.

What is the Story of the Blessing?

It appears this blessing was in Abel, and not long from then his brother Cain killed him and the blessing had an accident again, the absence of the blessing brought gross evil and wickedness on the face of the earth, until all the thought and imaginations of man were evil. God had to rescue the situation through the art of Noah and to restore the blessing in Noah: with the same words He used in Gen 1:28.

And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. (Gen 9:1).

Not long after that, Noah who was trusted by God to bring up a godly generation instead introduced a curse on his own son. This tempered with the blessing again and brought in idol worship and disobedience among man, another evil generation was born. God had to rescue the situation by choosing Abram to re-establish the blessing in him.

And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in theeshall all families of the earth be blessed.(Gen 12:2-3)

Note the way I have highlighted “shall all families of the earth be blessed”, God did this because He did not want to destroy anybody again in order to remove the curse that Noah brought in, so He allowed it to the will of man, (this was the second time God is giving right to the will of man) but planted the blessing again.

Not long from then, Abraham tampered with the blessing by bringing in Ishmeal (Genesis 16) but God came back to reinforce the blessing by testing his obedience of love in the call to sacrifice Isaac. When he passed the test, God continued with him for the blessing.

And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice. Gen 22:16-18

And with a covenant, God aligned the blessing in the linage of Abraham as it moved from Isaac to Jacob and so on.

If you were left only with the book of Genesis, you will easily conclude that the blessing or the seed God was promising Abraham was Isaac, but we see it otherwise in Galatians 3:16

How to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. Gal 3:16

The seed is Christ. The seed is the blessing. And so the blessing is Christ.

You can verify it back in scripture, you will realize that each time the blessing was tampered with, God will demonstrate a perfect picture of the crucifixion of Christ before He re-installed the blessing.

How did God communicate the blessing?

Let’s start from when Adam fail short of the glory; God crucified a spotless lamb, cleanse their sin with its blood and cloth them with its garment (which typify the garment of righteousness). This was a typology of Christ.  When Cain killed Abel and wickedness took over, to restore the blessing, God prepared the ark, a means to redeem the people from the destruction of the flood of Noah. Which was a typology of Christ. We see the same thing in Isaac the only beloved son of Abraham presented as a sacrificial lamb to redeem Abraham from his sin of tampering with the blessing by bringing Ishmael in the scene. The drama continued with Joseph betrayed, sold and sent to prison between two criminals, one was restored and the other condemned, just like Jesus on the cross with two thieves. The typology continued in Egypt with the children of Israel crucifying a spotless lamb again and applying the stainless blood on a wooden lintel as their means of redemption from the house of bondage.

When you go through the scripture, you see God acting the same gospel drama to reveal the blessing.

Jesus Christ is the Blessing

May it interest us to go back to Genesis 1:28. “AndGod blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, andreplenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth”

I have highlighted “God blessed them, and God said unto them… replenish the earth” because it’s a very sensitive scripture in the bible. Some scholars believe that if God asked man to replenish, it means they had been a destruction before. And they defend it by saying that this destruction happened between genesis chapter one verse 1 and verse 2. (commonly known as the big gap or pre-creation chaos gap theory) And so God is asking us to replenish what was destroyed. But I don’t believe the big gap theory, because if you believe the big gap theory, you affirm that the bible is not complete and that creation did not begin in Genesis. And in that state, you will have to believe the big bang theory that says the universe started with an infinitely hot, infinitely dense singularity, then inflated –first at unimaginable speed and then at a more measurable rate over the next 13.8billion years to the cosmos that we know today. Which I don’t also believe the big bang theory. And if you believe the big bang theory, you will have to believe the theory of evolution of the natural selection of species that seek to explain that man evolved from some early species far back before Genesis. And if you believe the evolution theory, you will have to believe the biological classification of man under kingdom Animalia. All these theories, I don’t believe them, I am not an animal. All these theories are demonic concepts to fight the redemptive plan of  God.

Jesus Christ on that day that He was crucified on that Calvary cross, was the completeness of the Blessing revealed to men.

Time to replenish the Earth

From Genesis 1:28, we see that God already had a plan by His foreknowledge to replenish the earth with the seed right from the beginning. He had in His mind a solution to the option of man’s disobedience and choice of partaking of the forbidden fruit. As He told Abraham that through his seed (Christ – the blessing), all the families of the earth shall be blessed. We have to reach out to every family of the earth with this blessing. The blessing is Christ. The blessing is the seed, and the seed is the word, the incorruptible word of God. we have to believe the word, we have to preach the word.

The blessing is not riches

If the blessing was riches, then between Jacob  who took the blessing and ran empty handed and Esau who inherited his father’s properties, herbs and servants, who will have been more bless? The blessing maketh rich, but riches is not equal to the blessing. You can carry the blessing and still be a servant like Jacob, or still be in prison like Joseph, but the most important thing is that, you carry the blessing, you have Christ. communicate the blessing.

The blessing maketh Rich

The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it. Prov 10:22

The blessing is Christ, the gift of the father, the seed of Abraham. He came back right from heaven so that all the families of the earth can be blessed.

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. 2 Cor 8:9

It’s your responsibility to allow the blessing to have its full expression through you. The blessing is your identity, the blessing is your Rest in God.

If you have Christ, know that you have the blessing. If you are not yet born again, then the time is now.

The Blessing or the Curse?

The blessing was trusted to Adam on the basis of fellowship and it failed, It was trusted to Noah on the basis of responsibility and it failed and so God entrusted the blessing to Abraham on the basis of a covenant. So that it may answer to will and choice

And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed; Gen 12:3

Those who accept Christ today are those who have chosen  the blessed Abraham, and God blesses them with the blessing. Those who unconsciously claim they are wiser than God and will not accept Christ are those who curses Abraham, and God will curse them.

What do you choose? The blessing or the curse! All those who are not in Christ do not have the Blessing.

The Blessing is for all the families of the Earth

We speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts. 1 Thess 2:4

To those of us who are born again, Don’t forget that the Gospel has been entrusted to you. It is your calling/assignment to communicate this blessing to the families of the Earth by preaching the Gospel in seasons and out of season. That is where you will find true Rest, real fulfillment. You will have to advice yourself that you will not take this golden opportunity of communicating the blessing for granted. It is the best thing you can do with your life on this earth. The great commandment from our master Jesus Christ. Join the train of communicating the blessing to the families of the earth today. Do not frustrate the Grace of God.

Who should Communicate the Blessing?

When you read through the bible, you will realize that God has been communicating the blessing from the foundation of the earth. We see the same in Jesus, who was the physical manifestation of the blessing, and He lived His live communicating Himself –the blessing.  The communication of the blessing therefore remains the only important thing a man can do in this world. If you do not have the blessing or if you have the blessing but not communicating it to others, then you are chasing after vanity. The blessing is Christ. Allow the blessing to be communicated to you, and take the responsibility to communicate the blessing to others. The blessing as promised to Abraham was the seed (Genesis 22:18), the seed is the word (Luke 8:11) and a man is born again by the word (1 Peter 1:23). Therefore, the communication of the blessing is by the preaching of the word, For it pleases God through the foolishness of preaching to save those who believed (1 Cor 1:21). In whatsoever you are doing in this life, ensure that you communicate the blessing. Your place of work is your field of contact, preach the gospel to your world. Your world is everybody you meet. Nobody comes your way by mistake, God cannot be taken by coincidence, God strategizes people to come your way so that you can communicate the blessing into them.   You are an ambassador with a moving embassy. Anybody who meet with you is right at the embassy, Don’t miss an opportunity.

There are blessings in the Blessing

When someone tells you “God bless you”. What does he really mean? To say God bless you is an expression of good intention, it is a way of saying that he means well for you. A desire that God should be involve in your matter.

However, we often refer to the content of the blessing and every good thing God does as blessings. For those who are in Christ, good health, riches, success, wisdom, strength, spiritual gifts etc are only an expression of the blessing. The more you make your fellowship with the HolySpirit lively, the more the blessing will have free expression.

Howbeit, we have to be contextual in our use of the word –blessing. In secular communication, every good thing is referred to as blessing whether from a godly or ungodly source. People see blessing in material benefits than what sponsors it.

This exposition is not that you should go into vain arguments but that you may understand that whosoever is born gain is heavily blessed with the blessing. This blessing is Christ and expresses himself in every other thing we may call blessings.
